Rep. Chip Roy, currently serving in the U.S. Congress representing Texas’ 21st district, recently expressed his views on Medicaid reform through a series of tweets. These comments reflect his stance on the need for changes to Medicaid and criticism of existing healthcare policies.
On May 8, 2025, Rep. Roy shared his perspective on Medicaid reform, stating “Our position is pretty simple. If you can work, you shouldn’t be getting benefits without working. If you are able-bodied, you shouldn’t be getting more benefits than the vulnerable for whom it was created.” He emphasized that those who are capable of working should not receive benefits without contributing through work.
In another tweet from the same day, Rep. Roy criticized Democrats’ reaction to Republican defense of Obamacare, specifically targeting the expansion of Medicaid. He stated “Democrats can’t believe how much Republicans are diving in hard to defend Obamacare and to defend the worst parts of Obamacare, which was the Medicaid expansion,” highlighting a partisan divide over healthcare policy.
Later that day, Rep. Roy reiterated his commitment to fiscal responsibility and budgetary control. He tweeted “We have an obligation to do what we said we would do. The president said we should get our deficits under control and balance the budget.” This message underscores his belief in reforming Medicaid as part of broader efforts to manage national finances effectively.
Chip Roy has been a member of Congress since 2019 after replacing Lamar Smith. Born in Bethesda, Maryland in 1972 and currently residing in Austin, he holds degrees from both the University of Virginia and the University of Texas-Austin.
