Blackwood wins SEC 400m hurdles title to lead Texas at Outdoor Championships

Kody Blackwood won the men’s 400-meter hurdles title and Kendrick Smallwood broke the Texas record in the 110-meter hurdles as No. 11/14 Texas Track & Field concluded competition at the Southeastern Conference (SEC) Outdoor Championships on May 16 with several medal performances at Hutsell-Rosen Track in Auburn, Alabama.

The results matter for both individual athletes and team standings. The Texas men finished seventh overall with 57 points, while the women placed tenth with a total of 36 points. Arkansas captured the men’s team title with 110.5 points, and Florida secured the women’s championship with a score of 107.

Blackwood’s victory came in a personal-best time of 48.26 seconds in the men’s 400-meter hurdles, tying the SEC Championship meet record, setting a new facility record, and moving him to second on Texas’s all-time performer list for this event. Chris Brinkley Jr. contributed an additional point for Texas by finishing eighth in that race.

Smallwood took silver in the men’s 110-meter hurdles by clocking a school-record time of 13.12 seconds, surpassing his previous mark and reinforcing his place among Texas’s top performers historically in this event. Kelsey Daniel earned silver in the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 16.64 meters on his final attempt—this result elevated him to fourth on Texas’s all-time performer list for triple jump.

On the women’s side, Amelliah Birdow won bronze in the women’s 400-meter hurdles with her best-ever time of 54.79 seconds; this moved her to third on Texas’s all-time performer list for that event. Jeanne Le Goff recorded her second fourth-place finish at these championships by posting an outdoor personal best of 13.22 meters in women’s triple jump.

Other notable performances included Isabel Conde de Frankenberg placing fifth and Mia Perez seventh—both setting personal bests—in women’s1500 meters; Shaiquan Dunn finishing sixth (with a personal best) in men’s discus; Sophie Atkinson earning eighth place points for women’s5000 meters; relay teams scoring additional points; and further contributions from field events participants such as Osawese Agbonkonkon (men’s high jump) and Nathanael Berhane (men’s5000 meters).

Texas athletes set multiple program records during these championships: Giavonna Meeks established a new mark for women’s hammer throw at68 .23 meters , while Smallwood broke his own school record again for men ‘s110 -meter hurdles .

Looking ahead , Texas will compete next at NCAA West Preliminary Round scheduled from May27-30in Fayetteville , Arkansas.
