Governor Greg Abbott has ordered the Texas Division of Emergency Management (TDEM) to activate state emergency response resources in anticipation of heavy rainfall and possible flash flooding in the Panhandle through the end of the week.

“With heavy rainfall expected to hit the Panhandle this week, the State of Texas stands ready to deploy all resources needed in preparation for potential flooding,” said Governor Abbott. “Texans are urged to heed the guidance from state and local officials and monitor local forecasts to avoid driving into flooded areas. Remember: Turn Around, Don’t Drown.”

The National Weather Service forecasts thunderstorms that could cause flash flooding across Northwest Texas as the weekend approaches. Residents are encouraged to keep up with local weather updates.

In response, several agencies have been mobilized. The Texas A&M Engineering Extension Service’s Task Force 1 is preparing swiftwater rescue boat squads for flood rescues. The Texas A&M Forest Service will provide strike teams with personnel and fire engines to support local departments. The Texas Department of State Health Services is deploying severe weather support packages, including medics, ambulances, and all-terrain vehicles.

The Texas Department of Transportation will monitor road conditions, while game wardens and rescue boat teams from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department are also on standby with helicopters equipped for hoist rescues. The Texas Department of Public Safety will provide helicopters, highway patrol troopers, and a tactical marine unit.

Additional support includes disaster assessment agents from the Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service for agricultural needs, power outage monitoring by the Public Utility Commission of Texas, oversight of natural gas supplies by the Railroad Commission of Texas, and air/water/wastewater monitoring by the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality.

This action comes as recovery efforts continue after recent floods in other parts of Texas.

Residents are advised to stay informed, follow instructions from officials, make an emergency plan, and prepare an emergency supply kit.
