U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz has put forward a bill to rename the post office in Bastrop, Texas, in honor of Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh, an eight-time Purple Heart recipient and esteemed American hero. According to Sen. Cruz, this initiative aims to pay tribute to Waugh's remarkable legacy and inspire future generations.

In a statement, Sen. Cruz expressed, "Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh was a local and national hero who dedicated his life in service to his country. As an Army paratrooper, Special Forces soldier, combat veteran, member of the United States Postal Service, and paramilitary operations officer in the CIA, his humble sacrifices for his country are an honorable reflection of what truly defines an American hero."

Joining Sen. Cruz in honoring Waugh, Sen. John Cornyn remarked, "Sergeant Major Waugh was a decorated combat war veteran, receiving eight Purple Heart awards during his five decades of dedicated service to our country. I am proud to designate this USPS facility in his hometown of Bastrop in his honor, and I hope it will serve as a reminder of his impressive legacy and lifetime of service."

Similarly, Rep. Michael McCaul praised Waugh's virtues, stating, "Sergeant Major Waugh epitomized the American values of courage, patriotism, and self-sacrifice. Through his unparalleled life of service, he undoubtedly saved countless American lives and pushed back terrorism and evil around the world."

Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh, born and raised in Bastrop, Texas, served in the military for over two decades, including combat deployments in the Korean and Vietnam wars. His exceptional service earned him numerous accolades, including eight Purple Hearts, making him one of the most decorated veterans in U.S. history. Following his military career, Waugh continued to serve his country as a postal worker and later as a CIA operative, contributing significantly to counterterrorism efforts.

The bill introduced by Sen. Cruz and supported by members of the Texas Congressional delegation seeks to rename the Bastrop post office as the "Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh Post Office" to honor his enduring legacy. This initiative aims to commemorate Waugh's extraordinary life and service to the nation, ensuring that his contributions are remembered and celebrated by the community he called home.

Sergeant Major Billy D. Waugh passed away in April 2023 at the age of 93, leaving behind a legacy of bravery, dedication, and selflessness that continues to inspire generations of Americans.
